Empowering American Citizens in the 21st Century
There’s an old saying that you don’t appreciate what you’ve got until you’ve lost it. This is the case with the decline of organized labors’ advocacy on behalf of all working people and their families, not just union members. In the mid-twentieth century the labor movement was a powerful advocate on a whole range of issues that improved the lives of almost all Americans. As Labor has declined, however, the combination of shrinking membership, empowered opponents and the need to focus on institutional self-preservation has reduced the movement’s ability to be heard on issues of broad importance. At present there is now no other entity taking its place. This is a proposal for filling the void.
The Constitutional Crisis and Bipartisanship
The mutated Republican Party of the early 21st century has led the American Republic into its most threatening Constitutional Crisis since the Civil War. The Party's actions over the past two decades, and especially during the Bush-Cheney administration, form a pattern that indicates that powerful elements within it are intent upon surreptitiously gutting many of the democratic processes and protections that have been in place for 220 years. In spite of a lack of dot-connecting mass media coverage, people from all across the political spectrum are gradually becoming aware of the threat. If the Democrats do not take up the restoration of Constitutional government as their primary issue during the 2008 electoral cycle, much of what our founcers created over two centuries ago may be irretrievably lost.
